Pope Francis’s Evolving Stance on Homosexuality
In July 2013, during a flight from Rio de Janeiro to Rome, Pope Francis famously asked journalists, “Who am I to judge gays?” This statement marked a shift in tone and earned him praise for a more compassionate approach toward LGBTQ+ individuals. Years later, in a 2020 documentary, he expressed support for homosexuals having the right to live in family settings, referring to them as children of God.
However, despite these seemingly inclusive remarks, the Vatican reaffirmed its traditional position in March 2021 by officially declaring that the Catholic Church does not bless same-sex marriages. The Church described homosexuality as a sin that contradicts God’s divine plan for creation, revealing a tension between Pope Francis’s welcoming language and the Church’s doctrinal teachings.
The Contradictions Within the Vatican
Pope Francis has been praised in Western societies for his tolerant tone toward homosexuals inside and outside the Church. He has even supported civil union laws for same-sex couples. Yet, accusations of covering up cases of sexual abuse within the Church have clouded his papacy, complicating his image.
Despite offering hope for inclusion, the Pope’s stance remains complex: he has condemned same-sex marriage within the Church, denied gay priests entry into seminaries, and upheld traditional teachings. For instance, in 2015, he expelled a Polish priest who publicly declared his homosexuality. In his 2018 book The Power of Call, the Pope reiterated that homosexual inclinations have no place in consecrated life or religious institutions.
The Catholic Church’s Traditional Teachings on Homosexuality
Historically, the Catholic Church has opposed homosexuality, viewing it as incompatible with biblical teachings. The New Testament emphasizes marriage as a union between a man and a woman, based on Jesus’s words: “From the beginning of creation, male and female He made them.” Church Fathers such as Tertullian, Cyprian, and Ambrose condemned homosexual acts as unnatural and sinful. Thomas Aquinas called homosexuality the "greatest sin of lust."
European societies, influenced heavily by Christianity, criminalized homosexuality as early as 360 AD under Emperor Theodosius I. Punishments were severe, including execution and stoning, until societal shifts in the 19th century began separating church and state, allowing for more liberal attitudes.
Modern Shifts and Divisions Among Christians
While the Vatican and most traditional Christian churches maintain opposition to same-sex marriage, some Christian denominations have adopted more inclusive positions. Groups such as the United Church of Canada, the United Church of Christ, and the American Episcopal Church now support monogamous same-sex unions and affirm LGBTQ+ members.
Pope John Paul II and Pope Benedict XVI upheld conservative views, seeing same-sex marriage as a threat to humanity’s future. Pope Francis’s papacy, though progressive in tone, still wrestles with balancing doctrine and modern social realities.
