Anna Chapman, born Anna Kochchenko in 1982 in the Russian city of Stary Oskol, grew up in a family deeply rooted in intelligence work. Her father was a senior Soviet intelligence officer stationed in Kenya. Anna pursued economics at Moscow State University, earning a master’s degree before moving to London in 2000.

Marriage and Move to the West

Shortly after arriving in London, she met Alex Chapman, whom she married within five months. This marriage granted her British citizenship. Between 2003 and 2004, Anna worked for a plane rental company and a bank in London. However, after four years, the couple divorced amicably but remained friends.

Career in the United States

Despite her apparent animosity toward the West, Anna relocated to New York, where she founded a real estate rental company. The business struggled initially but quickly turned around after a brief trip to Moscow. The company expanded, employing about fifty people and accumulating significant liquidity.

Through her growing business, Anna built connections with prominent American businessmen and politicians, including Michel Biton, a well-known New York restaurateur. FBI Surveillance and Capture

Anna’s increasing presence in elite circles raised FBI suspicions. They began monitoring her activities closely. A key misstep came when she was advised not to trust anyone claiming to be Russian intelligence. The FBI exploited this by deploying an undercover officer fluent in Russian, who met Anna in a Starbucks in Manhattan and gave her a fake passport to pass to a supposed spy.

Realizing the trap, Anna attempted to destroy evidence by purchasing two phone cards under false names and contacting her father, a Russian brigadier general in New York, for advice. Nonetheless, she was arrested in June 2010.

Spy Network and Trial

Upon arrest, Anna revealed she was part of a Russian spy network that included nine operatives working under the Russian Foreign Intelligence Service. Charged with conspiracy and espionage, her detention was brief. In July 2010, she was exchanged in a historic spy swap between the U.S. and Russia—the largest since the Cold War.

Following her release, Anna’s British citizenship was revoked, and she was barred from entering the UK. Yet, her fame soared. Photos circulated widely on social media, and she was named one of Russia’s 100 most attractive women that same year.
